PICTURE THE PAST
AND
THE HISTORY OF CAMERAS

A new exhibit has been installed at the Raytown Historical Society Museum, featuring the earliest photographs and cameras dating from early 1900’s. During the Civil War, pictures changed the way news was reported, from sketches by Imbedded artists, to actual pictures of the battles and events.

Many photos from our archives, are evidence of the early day popularity of photography. They depict children on ponies that proud parents had paid the itinerant photographer to capture for posterity, aswell as family reunions and such.

Cameras and outfits for developing film were expensive (a whopping $23.37 in 1909 Sears catalog) . The resulting products were known as Daguerreotype, and later glass negatives (Albumen emulsion). Etc., as well as what later became family entertainment, the Stereoscope, which included a viewer and 3-D cards depicting far-away places, famous people, and special political events. Families gathered in the parlor much as today’s families gather to watch television.

We hope you will enjoy the exhibit tracing the progress of photography through the early days, up to the 21st century’s amazing technology
